I was just watching TV and I saw a commercial about a video game (I dun remember the name) that had a gun running around in an Indiana Jones type way fighting like... smugglers or something. xD I dunno.. it involved a radio. Neways, I noticed that he was stubbly, sweat soaked and sweating, deshevelled and grimey. Just as somebody who had been thru a lot of action would be.
Then I thought about the Heavenly Sword commercial with the girl who beats up like a billion guys xD Her make up is FLAWLESS. Not dripping or nething. Not a hair out of place. No sweat, definitely not soaked in sweat. :\ (and the voiceover emphasis is of course about how beautiful she is)
Other video game commercials seem to be similar. While there's lots of focus on more realism for women to give them better "jiggle physics", apparently having them look like they've actually been thru a fight is just too realistic. xD
The NFL and NBA game commercials also show lots of men sweating due to physical activity. Women.. perfect. Make up doesn't run (and we've always got the eye shadow and mascara and lipstick caked on in these things), clothes aren't soaked in sweat, no dirt caked on our perfect prestine skin, our hair isn't matted down or thrown in disarray. >.>
I'm just tired of this idea of "female perfection and purity" that says basically a girl hero has to look like a porn star or supermodel with perfect make up that never ever runs, and that her looks are more important than the fact that she's kicking ass. :\
Of course, in game characters rarely DO sweat or get dirty (unless it's Rumble Roses' mud wrestling matches xDDD I do admit to luffing that game tho b/c all it's chars fit a fighting game trope (including typically male heroic ones) and they're all women!!! :D) b/c it's just too annoying to program xD But when you're selling, again... games r 4 boyz yo... girls play pink stuffs! And heaven forfend ANY boy see a girl sweating or showing signs of fight WHILE FIGHTING!!! Tha.. that would just be too much for their precious precious boy brains!
Cuz remember, women in video games exist for hetero men. >_>;;
It just always bugs me when I see superheroines and video game heroines who dun just look good and are pretty but have apparently caked on tons of make up that nobody in their right mind would put on before a fight (obv many artists dun draw that way, but some do). >_>;; Srsly, is prettiness not enuf for hetero boys that they need the full blown porn star make up look or well... they just can't play as a girl! That would be GHAY. xD
The funny thing is that one of the huge big things that guys I knew were so excited about when they saw trailers for the "next gen" consoles (before the 360 and ps3 came out) was that you could see dirt and grime and sweat on ppl's clothes and stuff. But then for the girl's they were so excited to see her eye shadow or OMG more jiggle physics (they didn't shut up about the jiggle physics). It's funny that when it came to guys they loved the "realism" which to them was that guys in a fight would get hurt, would sweat, etc, but for them "realistic" girls means that they are perfect fantasy figures with perfect caked on make up, perfect hair, jiggling boobs and no dirt or sweat or blood on them. >_>;;
Their "reality" is a little scary to me. xD
IN OTHER NEWS:

Make up is a natural part of a girl's skin secretions xD It's why we can keep it perfect during a fight!

I don't even know what to say. This whole thing with the portrayal of women in the media puzzles me. Why should women always be shown as immaculate (unless perchance strategically exposed or vulnerable)? Do they need to be physically attractive all the time?
Personally, I think heroism and competence (even without sexual innuendo) are attractive qualities. Let's see more of that for everyone please?
Everything women do has to be sexy because teh sexay is the ultimate goal for women to aspire to. Totally. Its the truth. The Bible told me so. 8P
And besides, everyone knows that Jiggle Physics is the harder programming task to accomplish vs realistic sweat rendering- the more the boobs bounce, the more programming hours and rendering time went in to it! ^_^
I'm glad you like Rumble Roses tho, Ami- it makes me feel slightly better for playing as much DoA Beach Volleyball as I did. ^_^
Oh, and, incidentally:

Bwahahahahaha!
I never played DoA Beach Volleyball cuz I heard the beach volleyballness was very simplistic and the rules weren't all there. :( (But since I never played it, I dunno if that's true, that was just from the Gamespot reviews) Also the guys I knew were WAYYYY too creepily obsessive over it... :\
But I bet that unlike them you actually PLAYED the game and enjoyed it and not just stared at it right? xD
I liked Rumble Roses cuz the face/heel feature was so brilliant. xD I luffed the fact that the storylines were different for the good and bad characters, and that all the characters had personalities and fleshed out stories that all fit typical Street Fighter/KoF personalities (but they were all women! :D) and the dialogue was amusing cuz it was so self-aware of the genre it was parodying. xDDD
Also the wrestling engine was quite good! :O
Oh, and have you ever played Beach Spikers for the Gamecube? :o I own it (it was the 2nd game I bought for Gamecube actually xD) It's SOOOOOOOOOO much fun and the engine is rly rly great :D Also you can make smexy girls :] But there's no jiggle physics, sry >_>
:D
I luffed that comic btw Owesome :D xDDD I think that that's the way all "nice guys" should handle their problems! xD (and many do! :O )
Oh yes, it was a game I played. But I'll hasten to add that myself and my fiance spent an inordinate amount of time staring. I think we gave up only when nobody wanted to accept the !@#$ing Venus. ^_^
Didn't play Beach Spikers, sorry. My GC collection stays away from sporting games as a rule, but I'll pick it up if I see it cheap (second hand prices on GC stuff in my town are murder however, so I can't promise anything).
Just a random thought: The last woman I can remember kicking ass and sweating was Sigorney Weaver in Alien. Nothing springs to mind since then. Weird.
Another factor is that, generally speaking, men can be seen as sexy looking unkempt and grimy. Look at Indiana Jones himself. That's seen as both manly and sexy in a fictional environment-including by more than a few women I know (though, they don't appreciate it nearly as much in reality). It simply not right that the women have this limited field of representation in gaming (and film). Especially when guys have a variety of options for being seen as heroic and attractive at the same time.
and the dialogue was amusing cuz it was so self-aware of the genre it was parodying. xDDD]
YES, YES, YES. It's AMAZING what a little self-awareness can do.

I liked this, too. Then I bought the 360 version (which is not so much a sequel as a kind of Director's Cut) and was disappointed that there was NO story mode at all!
Graphics were...nicer...though...
^_^;;
Still, half (or more than half) the fun of RR is how ridiculous the characters are. I was able to enjoy the 360 version because I knew the characters beforehand (and, to be fair, it improves on the gameplay in pretty much every OTHER way) but I can't imagine anyone knew to the series would "get" it at all. At least the character's personalities were maintained in the intros. (Candy Cane still hits stuff, Anesthesia still writhes around, Makoto still makes me want to strangle her, etc.)
In case you couldn't tell, I'm kind of a fan of the series. >_>
Owesome- not that it makes the list that much bigger, but Linda Hamilton in Terminator 2 was pretty grimy. And fun.
It spawned some imitators on the low budget end for a little while, at least.
